Create a haven
for little locals

Become a Family Day Care Educator
with Uniting Early Learning Queensland

“In a long day care service it is sometimes hard to make sure that you are creating a curriculum or a program that is relevant and for everybody. But in Family Day Care it’s so much more rewarding to create a program that is so individualised and supports every child.”

Family Day Care Educator

Family Day Care is a type of early childhood education and care approved under the National Quality Framework and has been operating in Australia for close to 50 years.

Being a Family Day Care educator is a wonderful opportunity for you and the families that you support. It’s a popular choice, whether you live in the cities and towns or the remote, rural parts of Queensland. Uniting Early Learning has waiting lists in many areas where ‘little locals’ would love to sign up for personalised early childhood education.

It’s a precious opportunity to create a haven for little locals while investing in other things you care about: your family, your workspace, your environment, your community and your home.

Is Family Day Care right for me?

For trained early childhood educators, Family Day Care offers the opportunity to create an ideal workspace in your own home.

Caring for local children in your own space can be deeply rewarding. It allows you to put all your expertise into practice while also investing in your own kids, your community and your future.

Family Day Care Educators are not employees, but operate as their own business, registered with a Government approved Family Day Care service.

Family Day Care may be right for you if you have:

  • a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education or higher;
  • your own home or a stable rental home

And you:

  • enjoy creating a nurturing and positive environment for children
  • like to work independently, in charge of your own work-day
  • love to help children reach their full potential
  • enjoy designing and providing personalised education programs for small groups of children
  • value the flexibility to choose your days and hours
  • would like to care for your own children while earning an income
  • would like to create long-lasting relationships with families in your community
  • want to find balance and purpose in your life

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s good to have questions! Here are some Frequently Asked Questions, and you’re welcome to reach out to us directly, too.

You are permitted to care for up to four children under school age, and a maximum of seven children of any age. This means you can offer before and after school care as well as day care for younger children. This can be a practical and great long term solution for families (including your own!).
This excellent calculator from FDCA will help you calculate what you can earn, depending on how many days you work, hours you offer, and the rate you charge, as well as whether your own children will be at home with you.

You’ll need to ensure your home is set up as a safe and suitable environment for the children in your care. The registration process involves identifying any modifications you’ll need to make – such as fencing and other safety requirements. You’ll also need to provide the resources and equipment for children to play, eat, sleep and learn. There are start-up grants that may be available to you to assist in this investment.

In many areas we have local families already on the waiting lists who will be delighted to be matched to a Family Day Care educator.

Once you know how many children you’d like to care for and the days you’d like to work, we will help by:

  • Matching you to children on our waiting lists
  • Advertising and supporting you to fill your vacancies
Day-to-day, we help by:

  • Matching you to children waiting for an educator (see above)
  • Managing the financial side with Government and family gap payments so you simply receive your full pay from us each week
  • Professional development opportunities, including networking with other early childhood services
  • Providing support and mentoring from our experienced team
  • Organising play sessions and access to our resource library

“I love that there’s a routine but everyday’s different. The children will take you to different places with their interests and their questions and their learning.”
