We offer a kindergarten program 5 days a week in a long day care setting.
Kindergarten is a time where the foundation of learning for children can be set to foster positive learning for life. And develop skills to equip them for the transition to school.
Our Educators develop warm, sensitive, responsive relationships with children to help promote the children’s development, learning and wellbeing. We encourage a variety of experiences and moments to teach throughout the day.

What is a kindergarten program?
Kindergarten – the year before Prep – is an important one in any child’s development. At Toombul ECC, we deliver a Kindergarten program that develops the independence and skills required for school readiness. This includes gradually easing them into the Prep routine of no sleep during the day.
At our Centre we believe that children learn best through play. We provide children with many opportunities to engage in self-initiated and interest-driven experiences. Children learn best when they construct their own personal understanding and then reflect upon this understanding.
Focused learning and teaching is important in early childhood classrooms. At Toombul ECC, focused learning and teaching may present itself as a structured ‘short class’ or as ‘teachable moments’. This could be a child struggling to hold and cut with scissors, and a teacher then assisting them by correcting grip and supporting them to develop this important skill. It also provides opportunities for the teacher to plan real-life experiences, including cooking, participating in cultural activities like NAIDOC week, and planning visits from community helpers such as the Police, Ambulance and Fire Service.
Getting a headstart at school
One of the positive outcomes of Kindergarten at the service is that many parents and local primary schools find that our children arrive at Prep (their first formal year of schooling) capable of looking after themselves, and confident in their interactions with new teachers.
Our goals in this Kindergarten stage of your child’s education journey are to;
- Extend children’s knowledge of colours and recognition of shapes
- Teach children the alphabet including the sounds each letter makes and the ability to write their own name
- Introduce mathematical concepts such as counting, time, sorting, problem solving, measurement and identification of numbers
- Extend children’s gross and fine motor skills, communications and self-help skills
- Help your child live more sustainably through educating about reusing, reducing and recycling in practical ways relevant to them
- Help them adjust to more structured routines through intentional teaching episodes
- Foster greater independence and self-help skills through being more responsible for their belongings, playing cooperatively and communicating confidently with peers and adults.
How we involve families
We value the positive relationships we develop with families, and encourage families to participate in our Kindergarten Program. This is of growing value in our increasingly multi-cultural community, giving children the opportunity to learn more about different traditions and customs. By developing and maintaining these relationships we can strengthen and support children’s growth and learning. We share information with families about the Kindergarten program, upcoming events and their child’s progress through:
- Conversations with parent at the end of the day
- A private portal which parents can access via our secure login to discover the activities and areas of interest we are exploring and skills we are working on
- Email updates
- Special Days where we bring community into our service – Welcome events, Information nights, Mother’s Day, Grandparents day, Father’s night, Book Week etc.
