Auslan program FAQs

No. Our bilingual Auslan program welcomes deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children to learn together in one inclusive environment. All children are encouraged to use Auslan alongside spoken English as part of everyday play and routines

Our bilingual Auslan program is for children from 6 weeks through to kindergarten (prior to Prep), enrolled in our Toowong and Aspley early learning centres.

Auslan is woven through play, stories, music, mealtimes, and group times rather than taught as a separate “lesson”. Children see signs modelled in real situations, which helps them understand and use Auslan in meaningful, age‑appropriate ways.

Research shows that learning a visual language like Auslan can support overall language development, cognitive flexibility, and communication skills, and does not prevent children from developing spoken language. For many children, having both a signed and spoken language actually strengthens how they understand and use language over time.

Families do not need any Auslan experience to join the program. Educators introduce signs gradually, explain their meaning, and share simple Auslan with families so you can learn along with your child at your own pace.

Yes. Families are warmly invited to tour our Toowong or Aspley centres, meet educators, and see the Auslan program in action. This is a great way to experience how children and educators use Auslan and spoken English together throughout the day.
